Climate Education Manual
Equipping young people with climate knowledge is critical for building a resilient future. The Climate Education Manual was developed through a co-creation process with students, teachers and education stakeholders, and officially unveiled in Abuja in March 2025. The initiative was led by Professor Chukwumerije Okereke with funding from the University of Bristol (UK).
The manual is explicitly framed to support the UNFCCC’s Action for Climate Empowerment (ACE)— the international policy approach that links climate change education, training, public awareness, public participation and access to information to stronger climate action. By aligning content and activities with ACE principles, the manual aims to turn knowledge into sustained local action and civic participation.
This resource was developed in partnership with the Department of Climate Change (Federal Ministry of Environment), the FCT Secondary Education Board, the Department of Science, Technology & Innovation (FCT), Clean Technology Hub Nigeria, Glow Initiative for Economic Empowerment (GLEE), the Office of the First Lady (Enugu State), the Centre for Climate Change and Development (CCCD-AFUNAI), Eco-Cyclers, the Renewable Energy Training Institute and SustyVibes, and is being integrated into a wider rollout with partners such as the Climate Champion Consortium and DCR Ambassadors.
Designed for secondary schools, climate clubs and youth programmes, the manual translates core climate science into locally relevant lessons, activities, and teacher guides, helping learners connect global climate issues to local impacts and practical community solutions. It is used as the basis for teacher training and regional climate-education pilots across Nigeria.
